PLAY IT AGAIN
Laura Frantz
Though I'm primarily an abstract painter, recently the variables and elements I think about--color, gesture, mark, and surface--have started to coalesce into figural beasts on the canvas. I think of these beasts (or monsters) as structures that enable me to play with the historical conventions of painting. Pointillist dots, expressive brushstrokes, optical color mixtures, and taped-off geometric shapes combine into figures that talk about painting both as a historical tradition and as a vehicle for personal, intuitive expression. In this project, historical tradition functions as a toolbox and collaborator, rather than as a structure to be dismantled and critiqued.
